Carrying on the tradition of The Salvage Association originally formed in 1856 on behalf of the Lloyd’s of London Marine Insurance market, we have built our reputation on Hull and Machinery damage surveys, and in providing support during the claims and repairs process.
Over the years we have also played a leading role in the development of warranties and surveys to support loss prevention. Many of the loss prevention surveys have been developed in cooperation with the Joint Hull Committee and not only include surveys of vessels but also management capability, on board fuel management and shipyard risk.
Today Braemar (Incorporating The Salvage Association) offer a full range of risks assessment surveys, many of which have been developed for our clients benefit. We also carry out P&I condition surveys, pre-purchase conditions surveys, and CMID inspections.
Hull & Machinery damage surveys
Traditionally The Salvage Association has built its reputation on Hull and Machinery (H&M) damage surveys. Today Braemar (Incorporating The SA) continues to provide expert reporting for H&M insurance claims. Typical H&M surveys include damage to; main and auxiliary engines, turbochargers, boilers, gear boxes and clutches, alternators and switch boards, thrusters and pods, as well as collisions, groundings, fire damage, propeller, rudder and shafting damage.
Condition surveys including loss prevention, H&M JH2013-007 A, B and P&I condition surveys
Braemar SA surveyors carry out condition surveys on all types of vessels for both Hull and Machinery (H&M) underwriters, P&I Club loss prevention departments and pre purchase condition surveys for owners or investors. The Salvage Association played a major role in the development of risks assessments condition surveys for the London marine insurance market.
In conjunction with the Joint Hull Committee at Lloyd’s Braemar SA were instrumental in the development of the JH2006 10A, B, C & D warranty surveys for underwriters. Braemar SA continue to work with the Joint Hull Committee and have recently assisted in the development of a new fuel management risk assessment under the title of JH2013 007 A. At the inception of these surveys the JH2006 risks assessments were renamed JH2013 007 A, B, C & D. The JH 20013 007 C Risk Assessment survey involves auditing the owners ship management operation.
P&I Club surveys carried by Braemar SA include; pre and post entry condition surveys, intermediate surveys following poor Port State Control Inspections. Layup and reactivation surveys as well as pollution control assessments and audits.

Ship repair costs and advice
Prior to effecting repairs following a casualty Braemar SA can assist in management and control of repair costs including; review of suppliers quotation, shipyard tenders and estimates as well as recommending suitable local suppliers, repairers and shipyards based on our local market knowledge.
On / Off hire surveys
Braemar SA provide vessel on / off hire condition surveys for owners and charterers, these include; the OVID and CMID inspections for the offshore industry.
Cargo damage surveys
Bramear SA surveyors carry out cargo damage surveys for cargo underwriters and P&I clubs, these surveys range from bulk cargoes, break-bulk, palletised and containerised damage assessments.
Crew and ship management company audits
Braemar SA undertake crew and ship management company risks assessments for underwriters in line with the JH2013 007 C warranty survey and can also provide ISO 9001 quality management audits.
Shipyard risk surveys and shipyard management audits including JH143
Braemar SA can undertake risks assessment surveys on shipyards and shipyard management for both insurers and owners. Following a series of shipyard accidents and losses the JH143 shipyard risk assessment warranty survey was introduced by the Joint Hull Committee in 2003. Since then Braemar SA have carried out over 450 shipyard risk assessments worldwide, resulting in a major decrease in losses in this sector.
International safety management code (ISM) Audits
Braemar SA surveyors are qualified ISM auditors and can carry out this work for both insurers and owners. The ISM code provides an international standard for the safe management and operation of ships and for pollution prevention.
Pre-purchase condition and Valuation surveys
Braemar SA carry out pre-purchase condition and valuation surveys for owners and investors. These surveys can be adapted to the client’s requirements and can vary from a brief inspection prior to purchase or an in-depth hull inspection, inventory and condition of machinery and equipment.
Sea trials verification
Braemar SA surveyors can attend onboard for sea trials following the delivery of a new vessel or repairs following a casualty. Our experts can confirm and verify that all systems and equipment function as designed and that the design parameters of the vessel are met.
In addition to ISM and P&I condition surveys which encompass the safety aspects of the vessel, we can provide bespoke safety audits for specific ship types, operations or equipment as required by insurers or owners.
OVID / CMID inspections
The Offshore Vessel Inspection Database (OVID) inspections and Common Marine Inspection Document (CMID) inspections can be carried out by our qualified surveyors.
Mooring and lay-up approvals
Bramear SA carry out mooring and lay-up approval risks assessments for insurers and owners.
Braemar SA continue to work with the Joint Hull Committee and have recently assisted in the development of a new fuel management risk assessment under the title of JH2013 007 A. This survey examines the onboard fuel management system from bunkering to injection in the engine and identifies any risks and improvements that can be made. Further advice and assistance can be given to ship-owners on mitigating the risks associated following the loading of poor or off spec bunkers; including the risks associated with high levels of catalytic fines and other contaminants.
